You get two vehicles:
Both must utilize a naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine.
Both models must be from model years 2008 to 2013.
Vehicle Brands must be from different countries.
*Star to anyone that includes a crossover
Have fun!

At present, I can’t think of a single modern N/A 4-cyl I’d actually want. I’ll let you know if that changes.
EDIT: For this exercise, I shall choose the base model Mini Cooper and the Acura TSX.

Regarding the first set: all Wobbles the Mind said was that “
Vehicle
Brands
must be from different countries
”. Technically, the Scion brand is (was) an American construct. Therefore, Scion can be considered an American brand (probably).
I only mentioned the BRZ in the second set, along with the Elantra.

I literally almost bought both of these vehicles! Back 2013 I almost bought an Optima LX but kept my Rio instead. Then in 2015 I needed a replacement for the Rio and was very close to buying a used Ford Escape Hybrid. Crazy!

Good choices! I had an Elantra GT for a rental for a week. I didn’t like it the first day. I hated it the second day! Third day I disliked it. Fourth day I was meh to it. Fifth day I was sort of ok with it. Sixth day, I liked it as much as a 2013 Mazda 3 Hatch (non-SkyActiv) rental I had a year before.

Actually, Lexus has sold outside American markets since 1990 and Acura was international from 1991-onward (though it only really spread much starting in 2004). I’d argue that only Infiniti and Scion really fit, with Scion being impossible to argue.

I love these challenges. Keep them coming! (Perhaps do a similar thing later on with five cylinders, except make the model year range larger because otherwise it would be all Volvos and Audis) :D
I originally had a DS3 until I realized that you can get one of these VTEC wagons with a 6 speed manual until recently in Europe, and with Honda tradition, it was most definitely not a turbo.
And a Dala 7, the Swedish Caterham built on 740 parts as recently as 2012 (I think)! What could be better?

To me it does what a baby SUV needs to do. It looks okay, it rides, okay, it has decent power for it’s size. It’s big enough that 4 adults can be comfortable in it, but small enough it doesn’t feel big. It’s 4x4 system is better than most AWD systems in it’s class. I actually like their interiors. Lastly the 2013 cut off year means no Renegade.

Let’s keep in the family, Mini Cooper 1.6 with John Cooper Works package (you could even spec it with JCW suspension and exhaust)

Ah, makes sense. For me it would be the BMW X1 since it has most of the same attributes but is a bit more powerful and the interior is a bit nicer, although it’s hard to say which does better offroad. The xDrive AWD variants though seem to do ok, and with a diesel at least you have torque since the 2.0L n/a I4 is likely down on outright power.
Still rather have a 1 Series hatch though seeing as I don’t often go offroad.

That’s us in the States. Elsewhere it allegedly can be had with a 2.0L I4 petrol with 143 or 170 hp, or a number of 2.0L I4 diesels from 143 to 204 hp. It’s hard to say for sure which are available widely, but I’m assuming Wikipedia can be believed.
